1.I have finally submitted some short pieces of writing to a writing magazine, something I’ve wanted to do for so long I’ve conquered my fear and now I want to do some more.
2.Sylvia, my lovely stray rescued cat,has jumped up and settled, purring,on my knee of her own volition. She is getting braver and more trusting in leaps and bounds, after arriving so frightened and unsure.Just watching her at ease gives me so much pleasure.
3.Saving a worm writhing and drying out in the middle of a path,in full sun, with no close earth to reach.I pick it up and put it in a grassy, garden verge,it immediately begins to nuzzle down into the cool soil.
4.Sorting out some piles of books I find a Russell Hoban novel I’d forgotten I had! I love Russell Hoban. If you’ve never read anything by him, read some now!!! Good quote: ‘A turtle doesn’t have to decide every morning whether to keep on bothering,it just carries on.Maybe that’s why man kills everything:envy’ ‘Turtle Diary’ by Russell Hoban.
5.A neighbour’s missing cat is found!!What amazing news, how wonderful-he’s such a sweetie!!!Sadly,it seems to happen so rarely. The endless posters and internet lists of missing pets is heartbreaking and most are never found. So awful.
6.I pass an elderly lady, shuffling along slowly, walking her equally elderly-looking dog, both stiff, grey and stooped. They look so sweet and peaceful together, sharing their slow days, taking their time.We swap smiles as we pass each other.Animals are such great companions.
7.I find a pen on the path outside.I love pens and it’s a really nice biro.I love drawing and writing in biro,so thanks to whoever dropped the pen,it was a nice gift,I’ve used it a lot already.
These may not be such huge things but they are the small, meaningful moments that enrich my life and make me want to write, draw, rescue, help and share. Finally,to finish,my last good thing was finding this beautiful poem, which I thought I’d share.
Wild Geese. by Mary Oliver.
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are,no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting —
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
